Where my engineer girlies at?

Something that’s always bothered me about the music industry is the lack of encouragement for women in technical work. Few women seem to receive support to learn mixing and mastering music. In almost every studio setting I’ve been in, it’s generally a guy doing this type of work. I haven’t met as many women working in these sectors. However, I am hopeful for change and took it upon myself to learn. I love the mix and master process of creating the world of sound in a song. I always have. I’m proud of myself for developing these skills over the past decade.

When I joined the Dreamgirl all-women producer group, I felt so much hope that this was changing. It’s incredibly motivating to know there is a shift: more women are moving into the engineer or producer seat. As a self-taught mix and master engineer, I hope to encourage more women to learn how to mix and master songs. This applies whether it’s for their own projects or projects they’re hired for.

I have new music I’ve been working hard on, especially when it comes to mixing and mastering, and I’m excited to drop each of them. Each song conveys a clear message. It includes themes of surviving an extremely possessive, deeply insecure person from my past who ended up stalking me and — in spite of that (thankfully, I have a permanent restraining order against him now) — developing the deepest self-love I’ve ever had. It involves becoming the most powerful version of myself and harnessing that unabashedly. Finally, it involves empowering other survivors as I empower myself. It’s a big piece of my life to share, but I refuse to let that person prevent me from speaking up.

I’ll share more as I get more comfortable since it was such a creepy, scary experience. But, as I have rebuilt my sense of safety, I want to more openly share my journey since I know it can help others (especially based on discussions I’ve had with fellow survivors and friendships I’ve built over the years). My songs say everything and I feel empowered to speak up in general.

I am so thrilled about these new songs! And, what’s been a big growth point for me is the mixing and mastering work I have done on several of them. I couldn’t have done this without the support and feedback of my friends and collaborators. Thank you so much, from the bottom of my heart.

I can’t wait to share these next projects with you all.

Much love,

Malsi
